Do you have a box of cassette tapes collecting dust in a box in a closet somewhere? Interviews with relatives? Old mixtapes? Dictation tapes? Get them transferred to a digital form now!
Step 1: inspection/transferring
I have several vintage tape decks to use to transfer your tapes. Each one has been serviced recently, and at least every few years I plan on having them serviced and calibrated. They deliver high quality sound given a good quality tape.
Step 2: Saving a digital file
Once it has been transferred to a computer in a digital format, I always save as a .wav file and as a .mp3 file. The .wav file is an archival format while an .mp3 is more of a casual listening tool.
Step 3: Improving the sound quality (optional)
For an additional fee, I can attempt to improve the sound quality. Just listening to the tape during transferring can give me an idea of how feasible it is to make it sound better. Some tapes were recorded on incredibly good equipment using high quality tapes, which are already of high quality. But on the other hand, some were recorded using a very cheap tape deck and the cheapest cassette one could buy. So the answer is not completely clear. Before I attempt anything, I will contact you to give you the honest truth on whether or not it is worth doing.
Why me?
Why choose Tyler Pronz, a 23 year old to transfer your tapes? Well, I have a BBA in Music Business, which allowed me to take several audio engineering courses with some of the best engineers in Nashville. Additionally, I have been digitizing and researching my own family’s genealogy for the past decade, of which there are a bunch of tapes I’ve restored as my own pet project. Lastly, through my own music career, I’ve learned to use all the technology inside and out!
I also make it a priority to get works turned around relatively quickly, and I pride myself on communication and honesty! If you aren’t in the Nashville area, no worries - ship them across the states!
